Charities & Not for Profit

Charities and not for profit organisations play a vital role in society – improving the world around them and inspiring people to make a difference to their communities.

At Pitmans we aim to understand the unique challenges and risks facing each organisation – and its trustees – and the importance of considered decisions to control costs, manage reputation, minimise risks, achieve legal compliance and ensure success. We also help our private clients achieve their personal philanthropic objectives.

We advise on all areas of charity and trust law to ensure governance in accordance with charity rules. Whether you need advice to set up a new charity structure or to meet your day- to-day business needs we can help. Our services cover advice around contracts, data protection, disputes, employment, formation, governance, insurance, pensions and real estate.

Pitmans experience in the sector is extensive working with educational establishments, professional societies, arts charities, military charities, stately homes, larger organisations and individuals investing their wealth. Our clients include Amnesty International, Unforgettable, which heralds the Alzheimer’s Society as a founding partner and Bridges Fund Management which invests in opportunities to improve society. We also have particularly strong experience working with Unions helping them with their pensions schemes and membership issues.

Case studies

We have acted for many years for the trustees of Amnesty International providing legal advice around their pension scheme including most recently effecting new scheme rules for them.

We provide corporate and commercial legal services for Unforgettable Trading Ltd (the trading arm of Unforgettable Foundation which is a charity). Its mission is to improve the lives of sufferers of dementia and their carers and they are an online marketplace for dementia-related products. The Alzheimer’s Society is a founding charity partner.

We regularly work with Bridges Fund Management Ltd to provide transactional advice on their investment opportunities which always have a compelling social impact. They also give a percentage of all profits to Bridges Foundation which is a registered charity.

Data protection has been a key area of interest for the not-for-profit sector. We’ve acted for a charity to handle a challenge over wrongful processing of personal data which resulted in a successful negotiated outcome. We’ve also advised a charity on a breach involving personal data which included representing the charity during an investigation process by the charity’s stakeholders and advising on notification to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
