Julian advises on all aspects of occupational pension schemes, including scheme organisation, restructuring and dispute resolution. Most recently he has advised extensively on pension scheme mergers following corporate restructuring and following insolvency events. He specialises in advising on managing section 75 debt on employer cessation events and has been particularly involved in advising trustees and employers on modifying debt and re-assigning scheme liabilities through both scheme and flexible apportionment arrangements.
Julian advises extensively on scheme wind-ups and is experienced in advising and assisting trustees and employers on various buy-in and buy-out options. He is skilled at liaising with scheme administrators, consultants, actuaries and insurers during the discontinuance and has extensive experience in advising on, and drafting, the necessary documentation.
Julian acts for trustees and employers on pension litigation matters including equalisation, rectification, and professional negligence. He is experiences in managing the litigation process through to compromise settlement and court hearing.
Julian is skilled in drafting all types of pension scheme documentation. His experience extends from amending deeds to benefit redesign and full scheme rules. He is experienced in drafting and reviewing communications with scheme members, advising employers and trustees on legislation and best practice relating to consultation requirements. He also provides guidance on, and management of, pension schemes through the assessment period prior to admittance to the Pension Protection Fund.

Julian attended Middlesex University and BPP Law School. Prior to joining Pitmans he was Head of Pensions at Amicus trade union where he advised on the Union’s officers on a variety of industrial relations issues relating to pensions including legal requirements, negotiating scheme benefit changes, consultation with scheme members and dispute resolution. Julian joined Pitmans in 2008 where he trained and qualified into the Pension department at Pitmans.
